Research and Development

The pHformula laboratories are based in Barcelona, Spain, drawing on decades of combined experience and are known for their scientific knowledge and quality products in the aesthetic, medical, and pharmaceutical markets. pHformula was founded in 2010 with a clear vision of skin resurfacing rather than traditional peeling.

It's all in the name
The “pH” in the name of pHformula refers to the power of the hydrogen ions (maximum protons that are delivered into the skin). The efficacy of controlled chemical skin resurfacing not only depends on the choice, nature or concentration of the acids used but, more importantly, effective proton delivery. Effective proton delivery sees the maximum number of protons delivered in a uniform manner, without causing excessive skin irritation during contact time with the skin. Protons are also called hydrogen ions. Once these active ingredients are applied to the skin, they function as molecules with the ability to transport the protons, the hydrogen ions, to different layers of the skin, resulting in the acceleration of cell turnover and optimum skin health regeneration.

Importance of pKA
Consumers, now more than ever, are increasingly knowledgeable on the advantages of acids to regenerate skin. They know that the pH value, and concentration of acids, are important in the efficacy of a treatment. The pH value is a way of measuring the acidity of a solution in the final formulation, as well as the tolerance level of the skin in relation to the pH value of the solution. To pHformula, the pKa value of the acid - the measurement of the strength of the acid, i.e. how acidic the acid is - is of more importance. Strong acids have a lower pKa value than weak acids. pHformula uses a combination of the strongest acids. As a result, the concentration of acids can be lowered, bringing the pH value and the pKa value into balance. This balance of both pH and pKa values causes regeneration of the skin and creates a resurfacing effect, unlike a deep peel which can have many unpleasant side effects. To further control the penetration of the protons, a delivery complex – unique to the pHformula brand – has been developed; the PH – DVC™ complex. This complex ensures efficacy without the common side effects associated with traditional chemical peelings.
